Maji Moto Chemka Hot Springs

Overview

“Embark on a day trip to the serene oasis of ‘Maji Moto,’ a captivating geothermal spring known as ‘hot water’ in Swahili. Nestled near the village of Chemka, these rejuvenating hot springs are fed by an underground river originating from Kilimanjaro National Park, approximately 60 km to the north. On clear days, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and its majestic peaks.

The oasis is enveloped by ancient, towering trees, creating a natural green haven amidst the African steppe. The journey from Arusha takes around 2 hours, and once there, local villagers operate small food and drink shops. I highly recommend indulging in a warm, crystal-clear bath – it’s both refreshing and safe. Non-swimmers can even use rubber rings. Camping facilities are available on-site. The Maji Moto area is meticulously maintained and overseen by the Chemka village community, who charge a modest entry fee.

Depart from your Arusha hotel or lodge, embarking on a scenic drive that veers off the usual path. As you leave the tarmac road in the quaint village of Bomba N’Gombe, dusty tracks lead you further.

Surprisingly, amidst the desert-like landscape between Arusha and Moshi, lies this unexpected oasis of relaxation. Along the way, you’ll encounter isolated settlements, but nothing hints at the lush green paradise with palm and fig trees. Initially, it might feel like you’re on the wrong path, until suddenly, the vibrant greenery reveals itself in the distance.”
