Arusha Waterfall Hike: A Scenic Adventure in Tanzania

Overview

This excursion is best suited for friends of hiking. The waterfalls are located just below the border of Arusha National Park, on the slopes of the extinct volcano Mount Meru. The river has carved itself a deep and narrow valley, on whose steep slopes the original rainforest with monkeys and birds has remained almost untouched by human hands.

A spring of crystal clear mountain water lies above the waterfall and is the drinking water supply for the University of the Tanzania People’s Defence Force in Monduli, ca. 30km away. The hike offers varied impressions and is highly recommended. You will start in Arusha city and experience modern Tanzanian city life, but when the path eventually starts to get steeper and you ascend towards the waterfalls and Mount Meru, the scenery changes and you experience a more rural lifestyle with mud huts, farming and animal husbandry. During the tour your guide will give you insights into the daily life of the farmers, far away from the usual tourist paths.

In the early morning, you’ll meet your guide in the Arusha districts of Sanawari or Sekei to embark on an exciting hike. As the tarmac road ends, the hustle and bustle of city life fades away. The path becomes steeper, immersing you in the authentic African village experience. Here, everything unfolds outdoors: small shops sell fresh produce, farmers lead their herds of cows and goats to grazing areas, and children play with improvised toys. African mamas bring fruits and vegetables from the shambas (farmland) to the city markets.

The ascent to the waterfall valley takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, depending on the chosen route and your physical condition. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of Arusha town and the surrounding area. If you desire, take a brief rest in a charming village, sipping chai maziwa (sweet milk tea with ginger) and savoring mandazi (typical breakfast pastries) or giabatti.

Upon reaching the waterfall valley in the late morning, the most challenging part of the hike awaits—a short but steep descent into a narrow valley. Your reward? A tropical jungle with rocky slopes and a babbling river. The cool air envelops you, and the symphony of birds and small monkeys fills the air. After another 10 minutes, the waterfall reveals itself—a serene spot for a well-deserved rest. Thanks to the early start, the midday sun warms the valley and its visitors. Finally, you’ll hike back to Arusha, and depending on your itinerary, transportation will take you to your accommodation.

Remember to wear sturdy shoes and weatherproof clothing, as the weather can change rapidly (especially at altitudes exceeding 2000 meters). While the hike has a few challenging sections, a touch of mountain experience will serve you well. Enjoy this unforgettable adventure in the heart of Tanzania! 🌿🏞️🇹🇿
