8 Days Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our team will be there to greet you. You’ll then be transferred to your hotel in Moshi town. Here, you’ll meet your experienced guide who will provide a comprehensive briefing about your upcoming trek. They’ll also conduct an equipment check to ensure you have all the necessary gear for the mountain adventure. If any gear is missing, don’t worry—you can rent it on this day.

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a pickup from your hotel around 8:00 am. You’ll then be transferred to the Lemosho Gate, situated on the western side of Kilimanjaro. Once there, you’ll complete the registration process. From the gate, your climb will commence steadily through the enchanting forests of the Lemosho glades. Your destination for the night is Big Tree Camp, where you’ll rest.

On this leg of your journey, you’ll traverse a plateau adorned with grassy moorland and heather, interspersed with volcanic rock formations. Our goal for today is to reach Shira 1 Camp, where you’ll often catch glimpses of Kibo Peak seemingly suspended among the clouds. As we ascend, some sections of the route will be moderately steep.

“Embark on your trek with an upward journey, granting you breathtaking panoramic vistas. As you ascend, you’ll transition into the climatic zone of the upland desert, traversing the lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. The pinnacle awaits: Lava Tower, standing at 4640 meters, serves as our high point for the day and a delightful spot for lunch. Later in the afternoon, we descend steeply to our camp for the night. Nestled at the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960 meters), our camp is sheltered by towering cliffs, yet offers expansive views of the plains below.”

"Our day begins by descending into the impressive Great Barranco, a vast ravine. We then ascend steeply, conquering the Great Barranco Wall, which separates us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. The climb involves rocky terrain, not technically challenging but quite lengthy and demanding. As we pass beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we proceed toward the Karanga valley. From there, we face a steep ascent from Karanga valley to our night’s camp at Karanga camp, situated at an elevation of 3963 meters. For those feeling strong, we’ll embark on a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek, reaching around 4200 meters before descending back to camp for the night.

As the sun rises, we embark on our journey from the Barafu camp, perched at 4640 meters. The path leads us across barren scree slopes, devoid of any vegetation. The steep ascent becomes even more challenging due to the thin air at this altitude. Upon reaching the camp, we replenish our energy with a meal and spend the afternoon resting, mentally preparing for the arduous night and day ahead. Staying hydrated and warm is crucial. An early dinner precedes our attempt to catch some sleep, for we will rise between 11 pm and 12 am to commence the final climb toward the summit.

"Embarking on our ascent around midnight, we ascend steeply toward the summit glaciers. Over the course of 4 to 5 hours, we traverse scree slopes, covering remarkable elevation in a short span. The vistas are awe-inspiring. As the sun’s first rays touch us, we find ourselves on the crater rim at Stella Point (5739 meters). Within the crater, magnificent ice cliffs envelop us, and the panoramic views extend to the jagged Mawenzi Peak and beyond—an experience that leaves us breathless. Continuing for another hour, we reach the pinnacle: Uhuru Peak (5895 meters). Our descent begins by retracing our steps to Stella Point, followed by a descent along scree slopes. Finally, we return to Barafu Camp for a well-deserved breakfast before heading down to Millennium Camp for a restful recovery.

"We embark on a gentle trek through the lush rainforest, descending to Mweka Gate. There, we complete necessary park formalities and receive certificates—a proud memento! Our vehicles await us, and we return to our hotel in Moshi. Treat yourself to a refreshing hot shower after this rewarding journey.

The day is left free to wind down after the trek before your flight home. Depending on flight times you could go and explore Moshi town and grab some souvenirs before heading to the airport.
