Kilimanjaro Guides and Porters

When embarking on your Kilimanjaro adventure, your guides and porters play a pivotal role in your journey. Let’s delve into the essential aspects of these dedicated individuals:

  1. Qualified and Experienced Guides:

    • Guides are indispensable for all Kilimanjaro routes. Our treks are led by highly trained and registered guides from the Kilimanjaro National Parks Board.
    • These guides are meticulously selected based on their experience, safety records, and feedback from previous clients.
    • Their expertise has significantly contributed to our impressive success rate of over 96%, having safely guided more than 14,000 climbers to the summit.
  2. Support Staff Ratios:

    • Our support staff-to-climber ratio ensures your safety and enjoyment.
    • Typically, there are 2 to 3 porters per hiker and two guides for a maximum of 4 hikers.
    • This optimal staffing, combined with superior equipment, enhances your mountain experience.
  3. Porters and Cook:

    • Porters do more than just transport gear. They arrive at camp sites ahead of you, setting up tents and ensuring your comfort.
    • In the evenings, they boil water for drinking and washing, while the cook prepares surprisingly delightful dinners.
  4. Weight Limits for Porters:

    • Each climber’s gear carried by porters has a weight limit of 15 kg (32 lbs).
    • Porters prefer soft duffel bags (barrel type) over rucksacks, as they balance loads on their heads and shoulders.
  5. Tipping Tradition:

    • Tipping is customary on Kilimanjaro climbs.
    • The average recommended tip per group per day:

Chief guide – US $ 20-25 per chief guide per day from the group
Assistant Guide – US $ 15-20per assistant guide per day from the group
Cook – US $ 10-15 per cook per day from the group
Porters – US $ 8-10 per porter per day from the group
